How Are Asphalt Shingles Made?

The production of asphalt shingles is a simple process that has helped it become one of the top products used by many a roofing contractor. The material is cost-effective, comes in a wide variety of designs and provides you with a roof that is resistant to a lot of external factors. Elite Construction & Roofing discusses how these shingles are produced:

Coating Creation

The very first step in this process is the creation of the innermost layer of the shingle, or the innermost coating. A mixture of crushed limestone and asphalt is superheated in order to make the mixture easier to apply. Afterwards, this mixture is fed to the machine that applies it onto the fiberglass mats — the innermost core of the shingle.

When this asphalt is applied, the machine coats either side of the mat. These mats are large and will be cut later on when the layers have been fully applied and adhered to the shingle mat. Depending on the roofing contractor and material type, the asphalt applications will either be multi-layered or just applied as a single layer on either side.

Granulization

Once the asphalt layers have been applied, the outermost coating that gives the shingles their color are then applied. This outermost coating is usually mineral rocks mixed with some asphalt and fiberglass and glazed with a ceramic coating to give them specific colors.

Once the granule layer has been added, the shingles are cooled in order to speed up the curing time of all the components. Ask a roofing company like Elite Construction & Roofing about the colors that asphalt shingles come in and they should be able to give you a wide selection to choose from. This is all thanks to the granulization portion of the process.

After all the components of the shingle have adhered onto each other, the shingles are then cut and shaped and prepared for shipping.
